Val,
I'm using an HP notebook without any difficulty at all.
The only thing that will take some getting used to is the missing number pad
on your right. Because that is missing, you'll have to get used to a whole
new set of hotkeys. but after a while, they become second nature.

Another thing I'd like to mention is that the virtual mouse which is part of
almost every notebook I have ever seen, is usually set with the sensitivity
very high. So, if you touch it accidentally, while you're trying to learn
the keyboard, your focus goes off into the fourth dimension somewhere.
The sensitivity can be reset or the mouse can be turned off completely
within the Control Panel.
I dislike double tapping that Caps lock key to get the system to recognize a
shifted word but other than that, I like mine very well.
One thing though, and I know I'll probably hear about this from someone, I
don't like the proprietary software that Dell loads onto their laptop and
notebook computers.
That, at times, can really give you some grief. All in all Dell makes good
equipment but I wish there was a way to get it barefoot.

Good luck and you can't go wrong with HP. that has been my experience.
There are some on this list like Andy who don't like HP much but they have
always backed me up better than any other computer manufacturer I have
worked with.
Andy is right though. they did make some serious losers a while ago. But
their new equipment is really excellent and the prices are quite reasonable.
