Hello Erin;

first, go to the view menu, alt+v, and down or up arrow, making sure that, 
status bar is checked.

Next,  again, go to the view menu, alt+v,

now, press the letter C=columns, press enter.

here, you can uncheck the columns you don't want to see.

Hi, everything you suggested worked on my desktop which has windows xp on
it.

However, when I opened windows live mail and went to view it said columns
was unavailable.  Also, pressing insert with page down only said details but
did not elaborate.
