Hi,

I find Winrar great. I think one thing worth noting is that all these compression utilities cannot be dismissed easily just as we do other applications. I mean you can not use one utility at the exclusion of the other: it is just a matter of knowing what kind of archives are you comfortable working with, taking into account your cronies and contacts' machines.

This is because Winrar is good in areas like creating RAR formats: this cannot be done by any other utility. Of course, WinZip and 7zip plus a host of other archivers can open RAR formats. So if you are interested in creating RAR formats, Winrar is your application.

On the other hand, just like what Scorpio indicated, if you are interested in creating ZIPX format (the new format supported by WinZip), no other utility can do that. I cannot enumerate the advantages of Zipx over the traditional Zip format, but suffice to state that I find this format more secure and reliable. If you wish to store files for your own consumption later, I urge you not to hesitate to invest in WinZip 14. The fact that you may have cronies who are not yet up to the latest gear shouldn't hinder you from investing in the latest app: just make sure to simply create a Zip archive for those people who are not using the latest WinZip program.

So in short, it is a matter of preference: WinRar is my own personal preference and I fell in love with it since version 2.xx and I never regreted my decision: WinRar archives to me are compact and cannot be easily cracked by brute force programs. Just my thoughts: but I encourage you to go ahead and get WinZip 14 -- those ribbons are lovely and you will still be used to them as you did with Office 2007. If you can, simply get both utilities as they will be handy for different situations.
Wish you all the best,

Cheers,

Ishe
