Hello Austin,

Using the Daisy translator plug in for Word might very well work for you on
a 32-bit XP system. I tried using the Word plug-in this morning on a 32-bit
Windows 7 system and it created the XML and speech parts without any
problem. The conversion to XML is done first and then the narrator TTS
portion of the process is done. When using my 64-bit Windows 7, the first
part of the process worked well but not the Narrator TTS portion. The
plug-in includes a pipeline lite executable so it should work on your
system. I have to use the Pipeline separately because for some reason the
process stops when trying to load the narrator TTS part of the process.
Again, when I tried the plug-in today on a 32-bit Windows 7 system, I was
able to create the xml as well as the Narrator TTS by just using the Daisy
translator plug-in, and so I didn't need the additional Pipeline program.

If you have Word with the ribbon interface then the plug-in adds an
accessibility tab to the ribbon. There is also an additional menu added to
the Office Menu. There are some definite formatting rules that apply when
using the plug-in. One is that there can't be a blank line as the first
line of any page. There are also rules for using tables, lists, etc. If
you move to the accessibility tab of the ribbon and use tab key across the
lower part of the ribbon, you will find two choices identified by JAWS as
being for help. The first one is just for version information. The second
one is for the actual help system. Formatting rules and other requirements
are in the various help topics.

The "save as daisy" menu is available by clicking the office button or using
Alt+F. Use down arrow in the menu and you will find the SaveAs Daisy choice
and there is a submenu. The first choice is for Daisy XML from a single
document. Using that choice will only create a Daisy file without the
speech. It is the choice I use before using the separate Pipeline program
on my 64-bit Windows 7 system. Use down arrow key to the next choice, which
is for "full Daisy from single doc" and move into the submenu. Use the
choice "Daisy pipeline TTS Narrator. The latter choice will create the
Daisy file using the default narrator voice on your system.

One thing you might want to do before starting the process is to go to the
accessibility tab and use the button to import Daisy styles. You might also
use the settings button and have it set to automatic.

One thing I can do with the separate Pipeline program is choose a bitrate
for the audio output.

You can usually change the default TTS voice in the text-to-speech options
of the control panel. This seems to be true for 32-bit Windows 7 as well,
but it is not the case with 64-bit Windows 7. The only listed voice in the
text-to-speech settings of the control panel for Windows 7 64-bit is Anna.
You are using XP so that shouldn't be an issue.

There are several choices on the accessibility tab. One of them is for
validating your document before doing the conversion. Other choices are for
working with acronyms, abbreviations, adding footnotes, picking a language,
and others. You can also use the "save as Daisy" button instead of going
through the office menu if you prefer that way.

Take care.
