Robin, I can't speak for David, but here's what I am using.
F
or portable recording, I use an Olympus DM-4, which records and saves files
in .WAV, .mp3 and .wma formats, at a variety of bit rates. (The higher the
bit rate, generally speaking, the higher the fidelity of the recording but
the more storage space required.
For microphones I either use the built-in mics (very good) on the Olympus,
or a pair of electret condenser microphones from Core Sound, or a lavalier
microphone from RadioShack and/or Sony. It depends on the kind of recording
you want to do; for voice, podcasts and audio blogs for instance, the
built-in microphones might be enough. For concerts etc. I use the binaural
condenser microphone pair.
I also have a Tascam DR7. Bigger, bulkier but with more dedicated buttons.
Uses common AA batteries (the Olympus uses a proprietary battery pack). The
Tascam doesn't record to . all formats, however.
I hope this helps. Feel free to mail me off-list if you want more
information.

A question for you on doing the recordings. What type of mic and device
are you using to record these and if one wanted to record in MP3 format
in good quality what would one use?

Subject: [JAWS-Users] an audio tutorial
I just posted a brief tutorial covering ripping an audio CD with media
player 11. Next I hope to post such an animal using gold wave this week
some time. With luck and time permits there are a couple of others I
have in mind that hopefully will be of some benefit.
