mariea,
you can get a simular effect to shutting down your computer and unplugging
the drive by putting the comp in sleep mode and turning the drive off.
i've also found that unless the drive was activly formatted if you have the
indexing feature turned off you can usually get a disconnect by using the
system tray "safely remove hardware" option
take care,

Thumb drives aren't a problem. However, when trying to eject my 1T
external drive, the eject option is not available in Windows Explorer.
Additionally when trying to eject through the system tray I'm told drive E
is not available. Unhappily, I end up eventually just disconnecting it
from the PC. So far so good, knock on wood. Smile.

I recently did it this way..
I was in window's explorer with focus on my drive which is "F", then I
also
hit the applications key and arrowed down to eject and entered on it, a
sound was given and jaws told me the drive was safe to remove.

1. Go to computer, press enter.
2. Highlight the usb drive you want to safely remove, do not open it.
3. press application key.
4. Press the letter j.
5. Your computer will say, It is safe to remove the selected drive.
6. Now, just pull out the USB drive.
I hope this helps...
