Multiline edit fields, such as in the Gmail interface, work with auto forms mode. If it isn't working for you then there's something wrong. ENTER should not take you out of forms mode; that was never the way it was intended to work, otherwise you wouldn't be able to make a new line. The only way should be either to press ESCAPE or the PC Cursor command.
