hmmm, you could try updating your sound card drivers I am having a similar trouble on my machine, using stock sound and video cards and am thinking of replacing them with higher quality ones to see if that fixes it, though it sounds like it will from what is said here

Tabbing didn't work and I got no speech. I shift tabbbed a number of times and still got that message jaws not responding. My start menu wouldn't even work. This happened yesterday. Using jaws 13.0.1006 the latest built on a 64 bit vista dell laptop. Has anyone else had this problem? I had to press the power button to shut the computer off and then start.
