Try renaming your normal.dotm global template file. It sounds like the one
you are using has gotten corrupted. See
www.support.microsoft.com/kb/247028
Take my advice, I don't use it anyway.

If I press alt F4, I'm taken to a screen which asks me if I want to save a
new template. If I press N, then I'm out of the trap. But I have to say

before I got this computer, some documents actually disappeared and I

their disappearance was related to this problem. And the other day, I was
changing something in a document that I keep and I got trapped in this
thing
and lost a bit of data.

Try pressing alt F4. I can't exactly remember, but doing that did seem to
get me out of Word. I kept pressing N for no and finally got back out. The
next time this happens, I will send you the exact commands I use. I talked
with someone else who had this problem. Like you, I want to find out what
exactly to do so this doesn't happen again.

That is what is happening to me with Word 2003 and the last time it
happened, I was working on a document and lost some data. Not only that,
but
when I looked at the document in My Documents, it had the last date on
which
I'd been working on it and not the current date. How did you get out of
it?

There are times that when exiting Word 2007, I am finding that I get the
warning that the program is in use by another program. I have no other
Word
files open. I can get out of this, but wonder why this is happening.
