But when this happens on a regular basis, what does it mean? Well, it
doesn't happen to me in 2003 every time, just every few times and I think
I've tried renaming the file without success.

Try renaming your normal.dotm global template file.  It sounds like the one
you are using has gotten corrupted.  See
www.support.microsoft.com/kb/247028

Take my advice, I don't use it anyway.
