The portable doesn't have to be installed, it can exist on a thumb drive with all its data. I tried it a long time ago. Thunderbird is apparently using a lot of data, because the portable version is slow on a usb2 thumb drive. I'm sure if you had all machines with usb3 you'd be golden, but usb2 is too slow for thunderbird if you ask me.
