Hi Sounds like you have the preview pain turned on, if using office 2003 then go into the view menu and arrow down till you come to "Reading pain" sub menu and in here check "Off", if 2010 then press keys, "Alt + V then down arrow once" Now use the tab key till you come to "Reading pan button" and when on it press the spacebar once again choose "Off" and see if this works.
