I think the major problem is that there are several companies selling captcha packages. These all use different techniques to produce their captchas. It makes it almost imposible to cover them all and it is an ever changing landscape. You think maintaining ResearchIt is a problem, this would be even more difficult to maintain. The only other solution would be to acquire the algorithms from the vendors and they want money for that. It is not really something screenreading companies can solve.
