I will take note of this for the next time I end ever to try that client
again, thank you for your input.  

I am using outlook 2003 so it won't be long before I have to upgrade or
change email clients again as it is being end of life when XP goes away it
self.

I'm using the 2011 WLM. I should backtrack a little, and say that the status
line does not give, or not reliably, the unread messages status.
I get the count of unread messages when i go to a folder. It does, however,
give you the message details of the message that is currently nearest or
highlighted, with a lot of ... for the dialogue's sake. I have the preview
pane checked.
