Take care. For some reason, though I have had the computer since July, 2010 SP1 was never installed on it. I went to the following Microsoft site http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5842 and after a few false starts was able to download and install it. After that I got about 30 windows updates including the one for IE10. Thanks for everyone's suggestions on this matter. And BTW I cannot even yet tell the difference between IE9 and IE10. If you ever need to find out what version of windows you have on a windows 7 machine type in winver in the search field in the start menu and hit enter on the .exe file that appears.
