That first screen is what they call the metro interface. Personally I'm against it myself.
I admit my windows 8 experience is quite limited and with luck it will stay that way. I actually managed to skip over Vista fairly well but not completely. I know that a windows key M will land you on a desktop in 8 and the search feature is somewhat the same.
