Dragon Naturally Speaking is a speech recognition program, also called a speech to text program. It is typically used by people who for many reasons cannot write or type. It does not require you to use Dragon with it.
As you know, JAWS is a screen reader, or otherwise known as text to speech software. If you have a need to use both JAWS and Dragon because you cannot see the screen and you are unable to type on the keyboard, you will need a 3rd software package called J-Say. J-Say helps JAWS and Dragon run and interact well with each other. I think it also adds some scripts that allow you to have access to JAWS commands that are typically executed from the keyboard. If you need JAWS, and do not need all of the features of Dragon, you might want to check out a program called J-Tools. I have not used the product, but it is my understanding that it allows you to do some tasks via your voice. First does it work with jaws and if the person does not have a screen reader on board can they get it to work. I know nothing about this but before they plunk the money down I wanted to know more about it so they won't get stuck with a piece of software they can't use.
