Hi Mike. Thanks for info. I just came across a simple freeware program
called MyMorph which converts .doc to .pdf,.txt. or tif files and allows you
to save them, If anyone on the list had the same problem I had. Thanks for
help.

Have you tried opening a doc file with Wordpad? I just tried it & it
worked, running XP Pro & J10 thru 14.

Hi. I never bothered to get Word, dince I don't do a lot of processing.

Do you not have Microsoft Word?
You could try Wordpad and see if that will open the .doc and then click
file, asave as from there?
