Honestly I have been following this and agree you most likely need a new modem / router.

The old one was purchased in 2003. The new one should be much faster especially for my wife's lap top. She is only getting speeds around 2 mb as opposed to the 6 or 7 that I have. I should be always around 7 or greater. When I had the 1 mb I was over that speed. The main verizon switching office is about 1,000 feet away and I am on a line by myself. There was a problem when 911 calls were reported as coming from my phone. There was a leak or bad connection so they placed me on a line by myself. I will get a new cable before I install the new router. Make sure it's at least CAT 5e. CAT 6 would be better; future proof and about the same price.
