Honestly I have been following this and agree you most likely need a new
modem / router.

I just ordered a new modem/router. The old one was purchased in 2003. The
new one should be much faster especially for my wife's lap top. She is only
getting speeds around 2 mb as opposed to the 6 or 7 that I have. I should be
always around 7 or greater. When I had the 1 mb I was over that speed. The
main verizon switching office is about 1,000 feet away and I am on a line by
myself. There was a problem when 911 calls were reported as coming from my
phone. There was a leak or bad connection so they placed me on a line by
myself. I will get a new cable before I install the new router.

Lenny,
I'd replace the cable first then see what happens.
Make sure it's at least CAT 5e.  CAT 6 would be better; future proof and
about the same price.
