I for whatever reason started dealing with this issue a couple of weeks back out of the blue. I did quite nearly everything under the sun to fix it and even had FS tech support's help, but no dice. What finally fixed it for me was turning the reading pane to off instead of the bottom option that it was always on. I have no idea why this worked since I've always had the reading pane to that particular setting going back to Outlook 2003 and my other accounts weren't affected by this problem, but for whatever reason, for this one account, it worked. For reference, the email account affected is a pop3 set up. My other two pop3 accounts and three imap accounts I also have running through Outlook 2010 dont' have this problem. I alsy noticed that only the undred messages weren't beign read by Jaws. The same issue appears in JFW 15. I haven't played around with it more to see if simply deleting the email profile and reconfiguring it would fix it, so I can't recommend for your friend to do that. Anyway, if they've got a similar set up, hopefully that simple fix to switchign the reading pane to off will work.
