The computer goes to the start button and I have to press windows Key D or M
to go to the desktop. Is there any way to make the computer go directly to
the desktop without my having to use either of those commands?

Are you sure you have Vista on your machine? I have used Vista since 2008
and never came across a start screen like in Windows 8.
