I have my laptop set to sleep after 15 minutes now because when I had it set to never I found that the fan ran all the time and the laptop ran very hot. It seems much better to let it cool off. Now with Jaws 15 the sleep does not cause a problem on reawakening. Previously when waking up the control or alt key would be activated so that if I pressed control and a key Jaws would say alt control and the key. I did find that as a work around if I opened a new document in notepad and closed it that the keys went back to normal. Go figure. This has only happened once since I upgraded. I haven't tried hibernation with Jaws 15 because it never worked previously in any way and sleep is good enough.

I have a desktop instead- so do you know whether it does save wear and tear
on the hard drive to let it shut down? I was thinking that this point had
always been controversial- but not remembering clearly.

Hi Cher,
Those particular settings on a laptop are aimed mostly at conserving battery
power, how much wear and tear they save on hardware is arguable.
If you set everything to "never" just realize that if you are running on
battery, and not at the computer, there is no real conservation of power You
can extend the battery life somewhat by removing it while running on AC.
Note: this may not work on all laptops.
I have everything set to "never" on all of my machines, because I don't want
to experience unexpected behavior because I forgot about a minor setting.

So letting the hard drive shut down or whatever does not cause any JAWS
issues for you? Do you just accept the default setting there? And, since
I've changed it, what is the default setting and what are you using if you
don't mind saying :) Thanks much.

So far as JAWS is concerned power management is not an issue. It is the
operation of your computer like waking it up ETC that is the problem.

I always turn that hibernation stuff off myself. The hard drive is personal
preference.

Does anyone know what FS recommends as the best power options settings for
Windows7? I have changed hibernate and sleep to Never, but what about the
hard drive itself. In earlier windows versions I think we were always
supposed to set that to Never. also. This system would sleep/hibernate in 20
or 30 minutes and there was nothing I could do to wake it back up- black
screen and no sound. What do others do with these settings?
