This certainly answers a part of the question. What if the volume control is
not in the system tray? 

The command in XP is:

sndvol32


The command in Vista and or 7 is:

sndvol

Also is the search box as affective in 8 as previous iterations of windows?

Yes, you can actually access the master volume via the system tray as you
did with the 2 previous Windows operating systems.

I do a lot of work configuring sound cards for people on the tech team I am
on although I don't own an 8 system I will most likely need to know how to
setup such an animal.
