Hello Mike, I am not at an XP machine right now so the AutoPlay might be slightly different than it is in Windows 8.1. In AutoPlay I have a list of options for removable drives. If the chosen option is "Take no action" then the window won't appear but the drive will show up in Windows Explorer. If the option is set to "Open folder to view files" then the window does open when the device is attached.
