Hello Mike,

I am not at an XP machine right now so the AutoPlay might be slightly
different than it is in Windows 8.1. In AutoPlay I have a list of options
for removable drives. If the chosen option is "Take no action" then the
window won't appear but the drive will show up in Windows Explorer. If the
option is set to "Open folder to view files" then the window does open when
the device is attached.

Take care.

Hi Kurtis,

Yes, I have, many times! LOL LOL

Each time I've made changes in the drives properties I've rebooted. Thanks
much.
Take care.

Hi Davidd,

If I plug them into my XP Home computer I am getting the pop-up auto play
window. Also, all 3 of the drives can be accessed through My Computer but,
just not getting the window opening after the device connect sound. Thanks
much.
Take care.

Try another system to rule out the drives being bad.

A complex system that does not work is invariably found to have evolved from
a simpler system that worked perfectly.

Hi David, David, & Trish,

First, thank you very much for your input / replies. David, when I
highlight the drive in My Computer & open the context menu, there is not an
auto play option, just an, open option. Trish, when I plug-in / start any
of the 3 drives I'm not getting any windows opening & that's what I'm
asking. Why are there not any windows opening when I plug-in / start any of
the 3 drives? Here are my settings in all 3 drives in, Properties/ Auto
Play:
1. Select an action to perform: Checkbox is checked.

Music files: Take no action is checked.
Pictures: Take no action is checked.
Video Files: Take no action is checked.
Mixed Content: Open folder to view files using Windows Explorer.

I've also tried:
Checking the checkbox for, Prompt me each time to choose an action. Using
these settings:
Music files: Open folder to view files using Windows Explorer.

Pictures: Open folder to view files using Windows Explorer.

Video Files: Open folder to view files using Windows Explorer.

Mixed Content: Open folder to view files using Windows Explorer.

Every time I make a settings change,I am applying it before moving on to the
next setting & when I'm done with all the settings changes, I then press
enter on Okay to save the changes & close the properties.

Anfd, I still don't get any Windows opening! I used to get an auto play
window opening whenever I plugged in / started any of the 3 drives but, not
with any of them any more. Is it possible that a service has been
inadvertently turned off? Thanks much.
Take care.

open using window's explorer

Subject: [JAWS-Users] External Drives & Windows Explorer

Hi All,

Running XP Pro, IE8, Outlook Express, & J13 thru 15. I have my external
drives to open folders to view files using Windows Explorer but, they're not
doing so. I used to get a cancel button in Windows Explorer once the drive
was opened but, this isn't happening anymore. The only way I know if the
drive is accessible is by going to My Computer to see if the drive is
showing in the list. Can someone tell me what to do so I can get my external
drives to open in Windows Explorer again? Is there a service that might
have been turned off by chance? All help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks much.
Take care.
