Tom suggestion really did the trick.
I had to root Jaws to PC and like magic there was the word count.

Hi Lawrence. I believe that Insert+Page-down will tell you how many words
are in your document.

I can not think of the key sgtrokes or how to determine the word count
in a document of Microsoft word 2003
