Hi

I think that whether or not an old external synthesizer along with a serial
to USB adapter will work on a 64 bit system depends on the driver itself.
If the driver is a 16 bit program, it's not going to work. But if the
driver is 32 bit, it should work on a 64 bit system. Under Windows 7 64
bit, I've successfully used a Dectalk Express external synthesizer which I
have had for about 19 years with Jaws versions 12, 13, 14 and 15, using the
driver supplied with JAWS. Since there is no longer a Digital Equipment
Company, I believe that the JAWS driver was updated and is supported by
Freedom Scientific. But in JAWS 15 on a 64 bit system, the only external
synthesizers available are DECtalk Express, DECTalk USB 64and TripleTalk
USB 64 . So you might want to ask FS if there's any way to obtain a 32 bit
driver for your synthesizer. I wish I could find a couple more Dectalk
Express synthesizers.

Now that OS's are gone or going 64-bit, I wonder what implications (if
any) does that have for developing drivers for external speech synths?
It would appear to mean that older synths won't work any more, even if you
can find one in good order. I have a Dolphin Apollo II which works with JAWS
on Windows XP, . serial port: but, even with an USB-to-serial adapter (with
which it would - and does - work), it won't work with JAWS in Windows7
64-bit. It's old ...
