Subject: [JAWS-Users] A PDF question
Hi, listers,
I'm using JAWS 15.9023 with Windows 7. I have an ongoing issue with PDF files,
which will only display the top (address and menu bars) and bottom, but none
of the actual, interior content of the window or file. Even this minimal
amount of information is all I can get using the JAWS cursor; the PC cursor
just registers the PDF file as "blank." I've tried using ShiftF10, or the
numpad slash, to simulate a right mouse click, and this is all I get. These
things used to work consistently when I had WindowEyes years ago, but I've had
this problem with PDFs, either downloaded or e-mailed documents, for some
time. At first I thought it was a function of some corrupted files that I was
never able to delete, that seemed to be effecting the functioning of Adobe
Reader here at my worksite. But we have recently upgraded from Windows XP to
Windows 7, and changed from Adobe to FoxIt. (I admit to not knowing much about
this program, but it should have allowed the document I linked to to be read
easily in a straightforward way.) I had a sighted IT person here at work
observing this, and he's usually pretty aware of how my setup is used and its
capabilities, and neither of us has any idea how to resolve this. It's
actually been more than a year since I've been able to get JAWS to read or
access PDFs at all and, as I've tried to describe it, this seems to be a more
general and consistent problem than I thought. Sorry for the long walk through
all of this; my basic question is, am I missing some obvious steps that will
get these PDFs to display properly. Is there a setting that needs to be
changed, engaged or taken away? It's almost as though any files of this type
are literally blocked, and since it is so consistent, I'm hoping the solution
is something basic and obvious. I meant to add the specific information that,
while using the JAWS cursor, down-arrowing took it directly from things at the
top, with one more keystroke, to "64.22%" at the bottom. I just rmembered
that, even when not reading PDFs, a similar thing often happens when I'm
trying to use the JAWS cursor to read other parts of a webpage; it will say
"100%" and "Done", at the bottom, but again, none of the actual "content" from
within the window (or maybe frame would be better) is shown. So, this is even
more basic; why is my JAWS not displaying things either within or around a
window, which, I always thought, is part of what it's meant to do? If this is
covered in some recent postings, I apologize; I try not to look at the daily
digests until I'm done with work tasks, so I tend to get behind. I'd really
appreciate any help you can give me.
Andy
