Hello Patti,
If your document doesn't have many headings then the CTRL with shift and N can be used without taking much time. However, if your document contains several headings you might want to use the Find and Replace dialog box to change the styles. When using the CTRL with shift and N you first need to select the line or lines that contain the heading style that you want to change to the normal style. If the heading is on one line then press the home key to move to the beginning of the line and then press Shift with end key to select the line. Press CTRL with shift key and N at this point to change the style to normal. You can use CTRL with down or up arrow to select a line at a time as well. Sometimes the blank line above or below the line of text containing the heading style doesn't change even when you select the blank line and use CTRL with shift and N. This is all related to the paragraph marks that contain formatting for a given paragraph. You might want to use the Find and Replace dialog box instead, especially if your document contains a lot of headings. Here is how you can change the heading styles to normal style using the Find and Replace dialog box. It might seem somewhat complicated but after doing the steps a few times you will find it not to be too difficult. Before using the Find and Replace box you should know the level of heading you want to replace. JAWS key with F should give you the style information when focus is on the heading. 1. Press CTRL with H to bring up the Find and Replace dialog in the Replace page. Focus should be in the Find What edit box. 2. Tab a couple times and if you hear "More button" press spacebar. If you hear Less button then shift tab twice back to the Find What box. If you press spacebar on the More button then also shift tab twice back to the Find What box. 3. Route JAWS cursor to PC cursor and then do a page down to the bottom line of the window. 4. Press home key and use a left click on the Format button. On a desktop computer use the numpad slash to do the left mouse click. The slash key is usually the second key from the left on the top row of the numpad. 5. Put PC cursor on, arrow up to the Style menu choice and press enter key. 6. Press H until you hear the heading level style you are wanting to replace and press enter key. You should hear Heading 1, Heading 2, etc. 7. After pressing enter key on the heading style to be replaced tab to the Replace With box. The JAWS cursor should still be on the Format button so don't route it again. Turn on JAWS cursor and left click on the Format button. 8. Use up arrow to the Styles menu choice and press enter key. 9. Press N in the list of styles until you hear Normal and press enter key. There are other styles that start with the word "normal" but the one you want just says "normal" without anything after the word or before the word "normal." 10. After pressing enter on the Normal choice tab to the Replace All button and use spacebar. You should be told how many replacements were made and you will need to use spacebar on the OK button. This ends the process if only replacing one heading level. If replacing more than one heading style then go through the same process but in the Find What box use the appropriate style to be replaced. For some reason the hotkeys for the styles don't seem to work in the Find and Replace dialog box, at least in my copy of Word 2013 they don't work. If you want to try them instead of going through the above process then use CTRL with H to launch the Find and Replace dialog box. Use CTRL with Alt and the number for the heading level to be replaced. Tab to the Replace With box and use CTRL with shift and N. Tab to replace All and use spacebar. Again though, the hotkeys don't work for me in this dialog box. Take care.
