You need to check the box that says something like "sync only checked artists, albums and genres." And you need to uncheck the box that says "sync entire library." Then you have to make sure the songs you want to sync are selected in the list. I used to know specifically how to do this, but since iTunes version 12 it seems to be hit or miss for me.
