It is not as good as some other programs, but "it misses a lot of threats" is hyperbole. If you're concerned about it, use a spyware program like MalwareBytes along with it. I also do an off-list scan with a anti-virus scanner such as Sophos on a weekly basis.
There are lots of people including Windows Secrets folks that use MSSE. It is certainly a lot more accessible and not a system resource hog as some other programs.
