I tab over to the message option, and hit the escape key, which asks if you want to save the info. I say yes, and it is saved.
Don't know if that is easier than what you do, but this is what seems to work for me. The disadvantage is that you have to tab quite a few times to get to the message option, but I guess I've gotten used to it.
