Hi.
I trust Windows Defender / Microsoft Security Essentials well enough. The reported reason it doesn't rate as well as everyone else is two fold

1. It doesn't bother blocking non realistic issues that are only really applicable in test cases and not a real world concern

2. Its detection engine is available to all anti virus applications like AVG and so on because Microsoft's goal really is to set the standard. The theory here is that all other AV applications should be as good as MSSE, then a little better because they should be using the detection engine features or what ever you call that, which MSSE does as a baseline. Why bother reinventing the wheel? Then they focus on making theirs better, I hope.

Now, before anyone asks me to quote sources, I have none. I read something like my number 2 item somewhere, and I'm making an educated guess on the number 1 item. Where I read the number 2 item from I don't recall, it's been over a year since then. That said, take what I say as just that, something I said, and not necessarily the truth, but also, keep in mind that I practice what I preach, MSSE and Windows Defender are all that I run continuously on my computers and to the best of my knowledge, it has been doing a decent job.

Yeah, ditto. I understand MSSE doesn't get the highest ratings, but it is
totally accessible.

I do tech support and I routinely use this as my anti-virus and recommend it
for others who use screen-readers. I use a separately off-line virus scan with
Sophos, although there are other scanners that will work, just as a backup to
verify that the computer is clean. I also run a separate MalwareBytes
anti-spyware.

Hi.
If you're running windows 8 just use windows defender. Otherwise, use
microsoft Security Essentials. That's what I've been doing at least. I'm
happy.
If you need a download link for Security Essentials (remember windows
defender is actually Security Essentials if you're running windows 8 or
8.1 or 10 so don't download security essentials for those OS's)
http://microsoft.com/securityessentials

also in case someone realizes that Windows 7 has Windows Defender, that
is not Security Essentials on Windows Vista and Windows 7, completely
different program just to confuse everyone so Security Essentials is
still Relevant there.

Hello, everyone.

You may recall that, a few days ago, I was having trouble with a program on
my computer running in the background, and interfering with Jaws.

Originally, I thought the problem was with Java.

Apparently, the problem was not with Java, but was with the latest version
of the AVG anti-virus software. I think the version number is AVG 15.

Last night, an AVG update occurred, which literally made Jaws totally
unusable.

I've now completely uninstalled AVG, and Jaws works perfectly.

Has anyone else had this problem with AVG, and if so, how did you deal with
it?

If AVG is not the most Jaws-friendly anti-virus program to be using with
Jaws, does someone have recommendations for a more Jaws-friendly anti-virus
program?

I'd prefer to stick with free anti-virus software if possible.

Any help would be appreciated, since I am not comfortable running this
computer without anti-virus software.

For the record, I'm using Jaws 14 on this windows 7 computer.
