FS definitely does advise against using Avast and with good reason. Avast can actually block certain features of JAWS. I experienced this at my job when an Avast update suddenly prevented JAWS from reading my Outlook email. I was able to fix it, but I had to perform a radical uninstall of JAWS to do so. I had to uninstall JAWS, all shared components and my user settings. I think I may have also had to do something with the registry, but I don't remember for sure. I don't have a choice at work, but I will not be trying Avast on any machine of my own any time soon. They'd have to make some changes before I'd even consider it.
