Charles, I started using the free version of Avast about 7 months ago. The interface isn't perfect by any means but the latest version is quite navigable. I have been tempted to upgrade to the paid version since the one I am currently using is excellent. For a while, I was using Microsoft Essentials but I had several problems involving Internet Explorer corruption. after I ran the free Avast, those problems went away. You may find it necessary to navigate the interface with your Jaws cursor rather than the system cursor. However, in the latest version, updated on the 21st of October, if you use your Jaws cursor to click on Scan, an easily navigable list comes up and you can choose what you'd like to do. One of the options is something called Smart Scan. This is a combination of a quick scan and a review of your software. If anything requires updating, Avast will give you that option.
