I notice no one has posted an answer, so I'll offer a workaround. When I've encountered this problem in a document where format doesn't matter to me, I copy the entire thing into Notepad, then copy that copy and paste it back into Word. This quick process eliminates all formatting. Obviously, it isn't a solution, least of all when formatting matters.
