Hello Tom: I have no idea why Outlook 2016 does not recognize your private Gmail account, all I can tell you is that I have many domains and thus, many email accounts and besides several in three different email servers and the one from my ISP Windstream.net, I have one at Gmail that works perfectly in my Outlook 2016.
I do not however, use the automatic configuration offered by Outlook for any of my accounts, I prefer to configure them all manually with no problems. Remember of course, that you should have POP3 authorized in Gmail before you can Pop your messages, but if you did it before, I imagine you do. Try doing it manually, remember to go to the Advanced tab to change the ports and security.
