Jim, I've also had increasing difficulty hearing the change in pitch. For this reason, I've raised the pitch from the default, which I believe is 30%, to 50%. Obviously, it can go further. If that still doesn't work for you, I believe the others who have posted are correct and that you'll need to follow Mike B's nicely done primer on how to set up a scheme.
