Those of us who use Linux have had this capability for a long time - load a rescue disk with speech and braille support, then use the command line to run whatever system recovery tools are needed.
If you're taking a backup to a USB drive (Flash or otherwise), just make sure you have enough free space on the drive for everything you wish to include in the bakcup.
