Hi Lenny,
If I were using a private network, such as a home or business network, then
I would say go ahead and set it up for him, but on a college network, where
you have no control over who accesses the network, then I would make the
printer a local printer only, and connect it using a USB cable.
When you do that, depending on how new the printer and Windows version is,
it should install right away, without any muss of fuss, as Windows should
have the drivers and all that.
If it's a multi-function printer, then it may behoove you to go to the
manufacturer's website, and download the software/driver package they have
for the model printer, as it'll have more utilities, such as OCR software,
and fax capability software which you'll be able to install and use for
free. Whether they'll be accessible with Jaws or not you have to "try and
buy", so to speak, meaning we won't know until you actually dry it out, but
in most cases, it should be no problem.
Either way, depending on which model printer and manufacturer, once you plug
it into the computer, you should be able to get access to the printer
settings through the device panel in settings.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] setting up a wireless printer and laptop
I am a little lost with this problem. My grandson started at Kutztown
college last week. The office for the blind purchased a laptop and printer
for him . He called me to tell me that it does not work. I just learned from
the guy that delivered the equipment to my home set it up to use my home
network. I plan to pick up a printer cable if I really need it. Anyway what
steps do you need to take to set up his printer in his dorm room? Can the
laptop and printer talk without being on a network? Will collages allow you
to add a printer? I will have about an hour to fix it for him.
