I use this method and it's reliable.
1. Press the Alt key to activate the menu options. 2. Down arrow to the Info option. This sometimes passes by and you might have to go back up to it. 3. Tab three times till you hear Protected View. 4. Press Spacebar and then exit the menu options. That usually works and it doesn't change the way Word handles all files. Some of them you might not want unprotected.
