The sound card does not replace the microphone, rather, you would either use
the built-in microphone or for better results, plug in an external
microphone into the audio input jack of your computer.  A USB microphone,
(or headset), normally uses its own sound card instead of the computer sound
card.

I use a Plantronics headset with separate 3.5 mm plugs for headphones and
microphone, with excellent results.

How does virtual recorder work, I understand the program uses the sound card
in place of a microphone as an audio input.  but would I beable to use the
recording feature of GoldWave  or does virtual recorder have its own
recording feature.
I have a 
dell st 2421l intell audio sound card not sure if virtual recorder supports
this.
