Hi Rick,

In Windows 8, 8.1 and 10, one can simply press Windows Key+enter to start Narrator.

With Windows XP, Vista and 7, one can simply press alt+U to bring up the Ease of Access Centre, and if it starts talking, you can press alt+N to start Narrator.

If the dialog box does not talk, the alt+N keystroke will begin the Narrator application also.

More likely than not, the Ease Of Access Centre may not speak upon launching, but as soon as I press Windows Key+U, I wait a few seconds, then follow it up with alt+N to begin Narrator.

If your computer is an older model, it may take several seconds to a minute before Narrator actually starts speaking, however, if you pressed the shortcuts correctly, Narrator will come up.

Also, when using the shortcut keys of Windows Key+enter to start Narrator, pressing it again will turn it off, as it is a toggle shortcut, meaning you can use it to turn it on and off.

Also, Windows Key+escape will turn Narrator off.

Hope this helps.

Scorpio

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Starting Narrator in Windows 7

Narrator can be started quickly when Jaws stops talking for some reason.
Simply create a shortcut on the Desktop for Narrator,
that can be launched from the desktop or via a shortcut key.
The file path to Narrator in Windows XP, Vista and 7 is as follows:

C:\Windows\System32\Narrator.exe

I suspect the file path is the same in Windows 8 & 10.

Once you have located the file, simply press the applications key
then select the "Send to" menu, and finally select Desktop create shortcut.
This will place a shortcut on the desktop, and you can assign a keystroke
from the properties of the shortcut.
Alternatively, you can de-select all items on the desktop, by pressing the
combination of the spacebar and the control key, and then press the
applications key,
and select shortcut from the New sub-menu,and copy the above file path into
the target field of the shortcut,
and then tab to the okay button and press the spacebar.
I haven't checked the jaws-users website, but it is possible that Dave
already has a shortcut for Narrator there.

HTH,
Rick Justice

Tomorrow's another day, another way!
and if tomorrow never comes, problem solved!
