Louise, first decide whether you want to keep both versions of JAWS. If you do,
and if you decide to use the control-alt-j shortcut for 18, you will first need
to remove it from 17. Or else keep the j shortcut with 17 and create a new one
for 18. To remove a shortcut, follow the same steps, except when you get to
"j," just press the delete key. Escape to get out of the dialog and you should
be fine.

Hi Fred,

Here's another approach.
1. Go to the Desktop with, Windows key + M.
2. Highlight the JAWS icon.
3. Press, Alt + Enter, to open the JAWS Properties.
4. Tab to the Shortcut key field, and type in the shortcut key combination of
your choice, like Alt-Control-J or whatever other combination you prefer.
5. Tab to Apply button, hit Space, then tab around again to the Okay button and
press Enter.
I have always had the best luck by 1st, Applying then Okaying in making
shortcut keys stick.
Take care.
Mike

Fred,

This JAWS shortcut is notoriously fickle. Try this, which works on my system.
Follow Ed's steps exactly up to and including where you confirm that your
choice of shortcut has been accepted. Then, instead of going to the okay button
and pressing enter, press escape to get out of the dialog. Ed is correct, but
I've found that taking that extra step to the Okay button often undoes the
shortcut. I have no idea why this is, but I recall others reporting a similar
experience.

A couple of points just to be sure. Note that Ed said just to type "j."
Control and alt are assumed unless you type some other key. So adding the
control and alt keys would risk sending the shortcut dialog into a tantrum.

Also, Ed suggested using insert-tab to confirm the shortcut has been entered.
I'm sure he's right, but that isn't the key combination I use. In my case, it's
JAWS key+8 on the numpad.

I automatically reboot after pressing escape.

Mr Ed, I have done all that you mentioned several times but to no avail. I
might just have to call freedomscientific. Thanks for the info and hope you
are doing well.

Hi Fred,
I assumed you went to the Jaws 18 icon on the desktop and pressed the
application key and went to properties.
Then you tab to short cut and press the letter J. Then do the insert + tab key
to hear that the shortcut key is ctrl + alt+ J. Then tab to ok. Then I am not
sure on this but you might have to reboot your pc for this change to take
place. I guess you can try it first then if it does not work reboot your pc.
Mr. Ed

I am using W10, outlook 2010 and jaws 18 and I cannot get jaws to work using
the control alt "J" keystroke. I have changed to different letters and numbers
but no luck. I even went as far as to unstall and reinstall jaws 18. I will
appreciate any suggestions. Thanks much,
