Agreed, Abby Fine Reader is the OCR engine Open Book uses and I get
consistently very good results from it.
I started off using OmniPage at the recommendations from the
rehabilitation center I went to. More often than not I was very
dissatisfied with the results I got from it. So I eventually abandoned
it in favor of Open Book.
Anyone want a free OmniPage 18? LOL! ;-)
Cheers!

I use ABBYY Fine Reader version 10 Professional Edition. The version I'm using
is 7 years old, so I'm sure there are more recent versions available. It works
pretty well with Jaws 18 and Windows 7-10, although it takes some getting used
to. These days, I mostly use my KNFB Reader app on my Moto Z Force smart phone
or the OCR function of the HIMS Blaze ET for reading print. I also use the OCR
function built in to Jaws for reading most PDF and other image files. However,
Fine Reader still comes in handy in converting PDF to a Word file with the
layout preserved well in the new accessible document. It's also great for
scanning larger amounts of material through a scanner equipped with a document
feeder. Fine Reader is a very powerful tool. It does far more than I can make
it do due to limitations of the assistive technology and the features that
compare images and machine readable text. It's really designed for sighted
users, but it works very well for me as a blind user, too.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Tradeoffs with Abby FineReader from Kurzweil 1000
Hello list,
I have Kurzweil 1000 and am considering switching to Abby FineReader for my
desktop OCR needs. I've never really got use to the K1000 commands or interface
and a lot of the extras that K1000 offers simply aren't of interest to me.
Included calculator, calendar, database look up, etc.
Like everyone else on these lists I imagine, my main interest is OCR accuracy
which from my understanding shouldn't be a problem since K1000 and OpenBook use
the FineReader OCR engine anyway.
As a Jaws user, I am also interested to know of any possible issues or
drawbacks/compromises one might encounter when using Abby FineReader as opposed
to K1000.
Between my iPhone with a ScanStand and the Jaws OCR feature I find myself using
or needing a standalone desktop solution less and less, but for those times I
do need one or wish to use for more involved scans, I'd like to be able to use
something where I don't have to remember a completely different set of other
commands and settings like in K1000.
I am using JFW 18 on both Windows 10 and 7 computers.
