Jon and others -

That's not a bad suggestion, but I think I know what the reaction from FS
might be. One of the most basic design philosophies they try to adhere to
with respect to JAWS is that JAWS should do _nothing_ that modifies normal
Windows behavior. Obviously, they aren't able to stick to this 100% of the
time, but it explains why, for example, you now hear the address bar in
Internet Explorer if/when you hit the TAB key as soon as a web page loads.
This is exactly what Internet Explorer does for a sighted person and the
fact that JAWS didn't duplicate this behavior was actually regarded as a
bug. I'm still trying to get used to this, since I've always used the TAB
key to navigate from link to link in IE. Automatically opening a combo box
wouldn't be in keeping with the design philosophy and quite likely wouldn't
be implemented for that reason.

Subject: RE: [jaws-users] navigating a combo box

Just a short bit of explanation here.

Those 'annoying' web sites that do something as soon as you hit
'down-arrow' on a combo box are being a little extra convenience for the
sighted world. In a sighted browsing experience these combo boxes show
up as menus when clicked on. Once a menu item is selected a
'JavaScript' (sort of like 'on mouse over') takes over and automatically
hits the 'submit' button on the form that is associated with the combo
box. As stated in previous messages, it is a good habit to hit
alt-down-arrow on the combo boxes so that the menu pops up just like in
the sighted world.

I wonder if IE scripts could be modified so that when in 'forms' mode
and on a combo box check to see if combo box is open on down-arrow and
open it (equivalent to alt-down-arrow) if not open?
