Hi Dan,
If you don't need Jaws to load before windows does, then you could put a 
shortcut for Jaws in the startup folder, and see if it reacts any 
different.HTH,

Just for another data point, On both of my win2k boxes, JAWS is set to
auto start but is not run as a service.  When the machine boots, there is
no focus anywhere.  Sometimes it seems that the focus is on the desktop as
it might announce My Computer, but it seems to be an aberration as you
cannot arrow around from there or tab or anything.  You have to alt tab to
JAWS before anything actually has focus.
