Just for another data point, On both of my win2k boxes, JAWS is set to auto start but is not run as a service. When the machine boots, there is no focus anywhere. Sometimes it seems that the focus is on the desktop as it might announce My Computer, but it seems to be an aberration as you cannot arrow around from there or tab or anything.
