Frankly, I'm getting a little tired of seeing this message, since this is
_at least_ the fifteenth time I've seen it in the past few days since the
original was posted and about the third or fourth time it's been posted
here.

And I think your "excuse to dump Norton" is overkill. I just installed
Norton 2006, which will be supported for at least three years, if not
longer, and am extremely happy with it. LiveUpdate works flawlessly for me
and I have things configured so that I am never prompted as to what to do
with something the program finds. In other words, my experience with Norton
has been 180 degrees opposite from yours and right now, I wouldn't think of
giving it up in favor of anything else.

And if I were to even consider changing anti virus programs, my first
criterion after accessibility is that it be _widely_ used and recommended by
IT professionals. This would eliminate, for example, AVG, which never shows
up in any top ten list of AV applications favored by IT professionals. I
regard this fact as extremely important--if the professionals who set up and
manage personal computers for a living don't use it, why should I do so? Not
because it's free--in my opinion, that's the worst reason in the world to
use an antivirus application.

If you need another reason to dump Norton, here it is.
