David,

I got curious and looked up the specs for the HP K5400 and which shows the
printer uses the HP PCL 3 enhanced printer language.
see the link:
http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en/sm/WF06a/18972-18972-236251-1156654-3328074-2511747.html

So then I looked up PCL 3 enhanced and found the following page:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=c00068221

which in the table states the PCL 3 "Does not support downloadable or scalable
fonts".

But, you got a better answer then I did from HP the last time I called looking
for PCL support.
I was told that HP no longer support PCL!
I hung up.

I have discovered that HP's web site does have the information available, it is
that they supply so some much information it gets
tough to find the one the document you need

Hope this help you out....

Well, got some feedback from the folks who developed the pcl driver. Cost of
the developer kit is $695.00 and they really can't
help to taylor individual needs. I might have been a bit short with them, but
told them it was much more economical to simply
purchase hp laser printers. This doesn't help me much as I still have my HPIII
sitting in my home office to practice with.
However, I don't have it turned on much, so it is not harming the enviroment
that much.

Update:

I installed the latest driver form HP. Printer can now be installed (windows)
on 2000, xp and vista.

Special note here... If you delete a printer and put it back exactly as it was,
jbase will not recognize it until you delete your
printer and re-install also in jbase.

However, results are still the same. I am now going to try the pcl conversion
utility.

Jim:

Thanks for your input.

This is a brand new printer, installed with drivers that came with it, then I
downloaded latest drivers from hp, because it would
not install on my vista laptop.

When I print a report on it, all the text, at least, prints, but the fonts are
completely screwed up. I.E.. instead of compressed,
they show up large and bold and other variations. My code was written to output
to HPIII printers, which I believe is PCL 5.

I actually have not installed the latest downloaded driver on my xp box, where
jbase resides and will try that. My next plan of
action is to attempt to install a package from a company called pagetech. At
first glance, they appear to have a software package
that includes a printer driver that replaces the normal printer driver, and
intercepts the pcl output, and converst is to a
"windows" format, and then sends on to the printer. If this works, it would be
a saviour, since one would not have to purchase
lazer printers for the pcl. Although, a small company, can get by with a
relatively inexpensive lazer now.

I am attempting this whole thing because I have pretty much retired now and
still like to dabble, but thought it would be really
convenient if I could have just one printer in my home office that would cover
all the bases of color printing, running as a network
printer, so I don't need a dedicated computer to run it, and of course print my
jbase stuff.

Gentlemen:

I recentlry acquired an HP K5400 printer. Specs say it has PCL 5
compatibility, so I assumed I would be able to swap out my old HP
III and replace it with this one.

Well..... I do see all the text that I am sending, but the fonts, etc are right
out to lunch. I get large bold characters where I
should be getting compressed etc.

Is this GUI pcl, not compatible with the original pcl ?

As always, any help is appreciated.

David,

I suspect that either this is one of those "Windows only" printers that has a
weak printer driver, or that you actually need to
delete the old drivers and install the drivers that specifically are for K5400.
Obviously delete the old printer and add the new
one, then make sure that your printer device is specified according to the new
printer name etc.
