Thanks to all for their recommendations. They have been very helpful, and I will be checking out several, both free and commercial. I have a separate internal drive which I back up to. I then copy that backup to a weekly folder on a 3TB external USB drive, which allows me to keep a month's worth of backups. I also backup my wife's computer to her drive, then copy to my external over the network. I'm going to stay with a completely Windows solution, not because it's the absolute best, but for simplicity. The first I'll be testing is Cobian.

I've started doing full backups every night because EaseUS's differential backup doesn't work correctly. I've tested it, and it misses many changed files.

I wonder what ever happened to bru, the free Unix backup software? It seems it's gone commercial. :(

Bob, Acronis isn't on my list because I tried them once and they lied to me about the devices they supported (back when I used a tape drive). Then they wouldn't refund my money. Dishonest companies don't get a second chance.

Thanks again,
Charlie

There was a time that I used Acronis (Acronis Backup and Recovery 10); it had various and sundry recovery problems, despite verifying the backup archive. This rendered the backups useless/pointless. This may have been resolved in newer releases (or didn’t exist in older releases); either way, I moved off to Macrium Reflect when it failed me twice. Others may have different experiences – just sharing mine.

for what it is worth...I have a 1 TB external hard drive that I simply create a folder on for the day of backup and just copy the data files to each day.  after a certain time period, like 6 months, I just delete the backups.  You can get a drive for about $100

Although it's OT, I'm posting this in the MV groups because I've always gotten very informed and reliable answers here. I've gotten a spanking or two in the past, too, but I'm willing to take that risk.

I'm looking for recommendations for Windows 7 backup software, preferably that can do reliable differential backups (not    incremental). I've been using EaseUS for mine and my wife's computers and the differential backup has never worked very well. They just issued a new version and want me to license it again. They didn't improve or add anything, just changed the user interface. I've finally had enough.

I would really appreciate recommendations of backup software that works reliably and isn't terribly expensive.

Thanks!
