This issue has been resolved on the upcoming 5.7.2.

In the meantime, on 5.7.1, if you wrap the WRITE in a transaction then the
PREWRITE trigger will work, e.g.

TRANSTART ...
WRITE ...
TRANSEND ...

or wait for 5.7.2.
